Right Brain and Left Brain Inventory :
While we have a natural tendency towards one way of thinking, the two sides of our brain work together in our everyday lives. The right brain of the brain focuses on the visual, and processes information in an intuitive and simultaneous way, looking first at the whole picture then the details. The focus of the left brain is verbal, processing information in an analytical and sequential way, looking first at the pieces then putting them together to get the whole.
LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS |
uses logic - detail oriented - facts rule - words and language - present and past - math and science - can comprehend - knowing - acknowledges - order/pattern perception - knows object name - reality based - forms strategies - practical - safe
RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS |
uses feeling - "big picture" oriented - imagination rules - symbols and images -
present and future - philosophy & religion - can "get it" (i.e. meaning) - believes - appreciates - spatial - perception - knows object function - fantasy based - presents possibilities - impetuous - risk taking
VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO ABOUT GLOBAL WARMING
1. Sell the SUV and choose cleaner, more efficient vehicles. Reduce your driving: one gallon of gas burned creates 20 pounds of CO2. Slow down for much better mileage. (Avoid biofuels like corn ethanol that can steal food from a hungry world.)
2. Use efficient appliances, replace light bulbs with low-voltage compact fluorescents, check your home insulation. Buy renewable energy, like wind and solar, from your power company.
3. Shop smart: Look for products made from recycled materials, created with renewable energy, and which help you save money and reduce pollution. Let the corporations who make our cars, fuels, goods and power know you want their products to be as ecological as possible.
4. Invite neighbors and schools to cooperate in climate cooling actions: Make pathways for walking and biking; put solar panels on roofs; plant community gardens; combine trips or use electric buses for daily errands and kid transport.
5. Suburban sprawl makes for lots of global warming pollution; plan for walkable communities, lots of trees, open spaces, and public transportation in and between cities.
6. Build new homes and buildings for efficiency and solar power.
7. Support sustainable farming and forestry, including non-food crops to make into ethanol and other biofuels
DEFINING ADDICTION
DR. Nora Volkow, Director, U.S. National Institute on Drug Abuse - 'Addiction has a specific definition: you are unable to stop when you want to, despite (being) aware of the adverse consequences. It permeates your life; you spend more time satisfying (your craving).'
DR. Martin Paulus, Professor of Psychiatry, Univ. of California, San Diego - ' Addiction is not just about substances. Addiction is about disrupting the processing of pleasure; the balance point is shifted so you keep creating more and more urges, and you keep wanting more and more.'
Scott Lucas, McLean Hospital - Addiction is a chronic and relapsing brain disease characterized by uncontrollable drug-seeking behavior and use. It persists even with the knowledge of negative health and social consequences.'
Joseph Frascella, Director, Clinical Neuroscience, Nida - 'Addiction occurs when behaviors start to become excessive. They are driven by our systems that stand up, shake us and say."The brain is saying this is good; we should do it again."'

A word is dead
When it is said,
Some say.
I say it just
Begins to live
That day.
– Emily Dickinson
